The most significant difference between the two websites is the level of customization. Facebook only allows plain text as opposed to HTML and Cascading Style Sheets. But despite its 3 year head start in the general public, MySpace fell behind Facebook in May of 2008 with a total of 123.9 million unique Facebook visitors. According to Alexa, Facebook’s ranking among all websites went from 60th to 7th from September 2006 to September 2007. It is currently 5th.
Currently young people are leaving MySpace in droves for Facebook. Some speculate that it is typical teens moving on from one trend to the next. Others speculate that Facebook attracts more affluent users. Facebook originated with Ivy League students who then attracted high school kids who were eager to become part of the culture in their upcoming college experience. Danah Boyd, a researcher for the University of California, Berkley, claims that the “goody-two-shoes, jocks, athletes, and other ‘good’ kids” are going to Facebook. These ‘good’ kids are attracted first to the Facebook’s origin and they are also eager to stay away from the controversy that surrounds MySpace. Therefore there is evidence of a class divide rather than a change in trend for all young users. It will be interesting to see if Facebook becomes similarly polluted.

Todays music fan interacts with a community that is far larger than anyone ever dreamed possible before the widespread personal use of the Internet. This social networking is changing the way people market and sell music and its doing so on a global scale.

One fan hears a song and tells a dozen others online. Each, in turn, sends the information (and sometimes the entire song file) to another dozen people, and so on. If the songs hook is catchy and universal enough, the artist can reach thousands of fans in a matter of seconds. Its fast, its easy, its free, and its global.
Does this viral communication bring any income for that artist (or songwriter, or publisher, or manager, or agent, or distributor, or record label)? No. But does it provide vital publicity that has the potential of selling singles, albums, concert tickets and merchandise? Absolutely.
The New Means of Marketing:
This is a quantum shift in marketing. It holds out the possibility of bypassing brick-and-mortar distribution, while severely curtailing the barely-legal forms of radio promotion that many in the industry openly refer to as payola or commercial station extortion.

In a highly unusual use of a federal law in which legal experts describe as "creative" and "aggressive," a St. Louis, Missouri woman has been indicted in what may be the country's first case of cyber-bullying. Federal prosecutors say Lori Drew, 49, and others created an account on the social networking site MySpace pretending to be a 16-year-old boy to fool her neighbor, 13-year-old Megan Meier.
According to prosecutors, Drew used the MySpace account to establish a relationship with Meier, acting for weeks to be a boy interested in forming a romantic relationship her. A short time later, Drew suddenly ended the relationship, taunting Meier and telling her the world would be better off without her. Consequently, a distraught Meier committed suicide by hanging herself.
Drew is Arrested and Charged with a Crime
The federal indictment, which was delivered in Los Angeles after state prosecutors in Missouri declined to bring charges, is unprecedented, and legal commentators believe it may seriously stretch the federal statute on which it was based. The indictment charged that in violation of MySpace terms of service, "Drew and co-conspirators knowingly and agreed with each other to intentionally access a computer ... to further a tortious act, namely, intentional infliction of emotion distress." According to the prosecution, Drew violated MySpace's terms by using a fictitious name, among other things, and thus had no authority to access the MySpace service.
"This adult woman allegedly used the Internet to target a young teenage girl, with horrendous ramifications," said United States Attorney Thomas O'Brien. "Any adult who uses the Internet or a social-gathering website to harass or bully another person, particularly a young girl, must realize their actions can have serious consequences."
The Unprecedented Charges may Create a New Realm of Cases
The case presents a new wrinkle in the interpretation of federal law. Legal experts warned that such an interpretation could criminalize routine behavior on the internet. After all, people regularly create accounts or post information under aliases for many legitimate reasons, including avoiding spam and a desire to maintain their privacy online.
This new interpretation also gives a business contract the force of a law: violations of a web site's terms of service could now lead to criminal sanctions, instead of just civil lawsuits or ejection from a site.
"I think the danger of applying a statute in this way is that it could have unintended consequences," said John Palfrey, a Harvard law professor. "An application of a general statute like this might result in chilling a great deal of online speech and other freedom." Drew is scheduled to be arraigned in St. Louis but the trial will be held in Los Angeles were MySpace is headquartered. If convicted of the charges, Drew faces up to 20 years in prison.

You've probably noticed more and more people are using animated avatars all over the web. They have become especially popular on MySpace, and it's a lot of fun to browse through the different profiles and see the creative avatars that people have come up with. After seeing several avatars that intrigued you, you have probably decided that you'd like an animated avatar on your own profile.
There are several ways that you can create an animated avatar to place on your MySpace profile. One way is to use a couple of freeware applications which are called Gimp and Movie Snapshot. Movie Snapshot takes a thumbnail sized clip out of any video you may have on your hard drive, and Gimp is used to manipulate the video clip in order to create your avatar. Of course, there's more to the creation of an avatar with these programs than meets the eye. If you don't want to spend a whole lot of time fiddling around with a Photoshop clone, trying to get your image exactly the way you want it, then you need a faster and easier solution to get your avatar up and running. There is a much easier way, and it's called Meez.
Meez is a website which you can use to make an avatar of yourself. This avatar is a rendered, three dimensional figure that is amazingly lifelike and almost infinitely customizable. You will be amazed at what you can do with Meez! And, the avatar you make can be used anywhere on the internet. Some people try to get their Meez avatar to look as much like themselves as possible, while others go for a totally opposite effect. With a huge selection of items such as hair styles and colors, facial expressions, clothing and accessories, and backgrounds to choose from, you can change your look as often as you want.
You can use the Meez website for free. The only charge is when you decide that you want to purchase a premium item for your avatar, and even then the cost is minimal. You can definitely make a wonderful avatar with the selections available at no charge - there are a ton of choices in many categories to choose from! It only takes a few minutes to create an account on Meez, and then you are ready to create your avatar.
Meez allows you to have one avatar per account, but you can create and save up to five different versions of that one avatar, so it's possible to have five very different looks. To use your new avatar, all you need to do is go to the "Export Meez" area. You can download the avatar and save it as a JPEG file on your own computer or you can choose the Link option. Using Link allows you to host your avatar on the Meez website for free. You will be given an HTML code link for your avatar which you then use to place the image on MySpace. Go to the section where you edit your profile, and paste the HTML code into the About Me section. Preview your profile and if everything looks the way you want it, save the page.
To place a headshot of your avatar onto your profile, you will need to use the JPEG option. Simply go to the link for uploading and changing photos, and once you get to the upload photo section, click Browse to find the Meez jpg on your computer. Once you have chosen the correct file, just click Upload and presto! Your profile photo has been changed to your avatar! Hint - for best results, save the JPEG as a Large Headshot image.

It is very easy to spice up your MySpace page to make it as unique and reflective of your personality as possible. MySpace is often used to share photos with friends and family. But sometimes it can get annoying to have to scroll down the screen past hundreds of pictures. If you'd like to show off your pictures, put them in an easily viewable and attractive format with a MySpace slideshow.
MySpace comes with its own slideshow generator, or you can choose to use a third-party slideshow generator. To use the slideshow feature within MySpace, log into your account and click on "Add/Edit Photos". You will see your existing photo albums here, and you will also be able to upload new photos. Upload any new pictures that you want to put in your MySpace slideshow. After you've done this, click on the "Add pictures to a slideshow" option. You can choose which pictures to include, and also customize many features of the slideshow presentation. A code will be generated when you're finished. Paste this into one of the text boxes on your profile, and save. Your slideshow will be viewable.
When you use a third-party MySpace slideshow generator, you can present your photographs in lots of different ways. The recent media blitz regarding MySpace has snowballed in the recent months. Parents, teachers and other school officials all over the country are calling for the banning of MySpace. Will they succeed?
No.
Why not? Because MySpace is free, fun... and everyone is doing it. MySpace is not anymore dangerous than any school, mall, neighborhood park.
Still this doesn't mean that MySpace users couldn't benefit from a little common sense while navigating through MySpace. The surprising thing is that MySpace offers tools and options for users to take control of their profile. Many users just don't know that those options exist.
I've compiled a list of options/tips that you can use to protect yourself on MySpace and take control of your profile.
1) Private profile
Yes, MySpace allows users to have a private profile. Having a private profile means that only those users on your friend's list will be able to view your profile. Unfortunately, this privacy option is only available to MySpace's younger users. That being said, some adults simply change their age under Edit Profile-Basic Info to use this feature. Be warned -- MySpace has a policy about adult users doing this. Yet, it's a good to know that it is available for younger teens.*
2) Require Last Name/Email Address To Add As Friend
Tired of getting random friend requests from strangers? Change this setting and users will have to enter either your email address or last name to be able to complete the add process. **
3) Hide Your Online Status
Don't want other users to know when you're online. Change this setting and the "Online Now" icon won't appear next to your photo when other users see it. **
4) The 'About Me' Survey
This popular survey is posted on many users profiles as a way to introduce yourself. It's all in fun... except for a few questions. The survey asks for your full name, birth place and date of birth. Do not post this information! Anyone viewing this information could use it to piece together your identity and find your address, phone number, social security number, request a background check, even break into your email. Never reveal this information to anyone who you don't already know.
